Dome vs Bullet Camera – Which One Do You Actually Need?

Dome vs Bullet CCTV Camera – Full Comparison (Real Installation Guide)

By GNC CCTV INSTALLATION AND SERVICES | Based on 200+ Installations in Tiruppur

Every customer asks us the same question: "Sir, dome camera better-ah? Illa bullet camera better-ah?"

The answer is not what you'll find on most websites. It depends entirely on where you're installing it and what problem you're solving. We've installed both types across hundreds of homes, shops, and factories. Here's the honest, ground-level comparison no one else gives you.

The Real Difference (Beyond Shape)

Factor Dome Camera Bullet Camera
Shape Round, compact, sits flat on ceiling Cylindrical, sticks out from wall
Best Mounting Spot Ceiling (indoor) or under eaves Wall (outdoor) or pole
Visible Deterrent? Low profile – blends in Highly visible – acts as warning
Vandal Resistance Excellent – hard to tamper with angle Moderate – can be pushed/pulled if low
Weather Handling Good if IP67 rated Excellent – natural water runoff
Lens Angle Flexibility Easy to adjust angle after mounting Fixed focus direction once mounted
IR Glow at Night Less visible red glow More visible red glow (deterrent effect)

When to Choose a Dome Camera

✅ Best For: Indoor ceilings, reception areas, shops, corridors, covered parking

We recommend dome cameras when you want discreet coverage. The camera sits flush on the ceiling. Most people don't even notice it's there until you point it out.

Real installation insight: In Tiruppur textile shops and offices, we almost always use domes for indoor coverage. Why? Because the round shape makes it hard for anyone to tell exactly which direction the lens is pointing. This creates a psychological "wide coverage" effect even if the camera is focused on one counter.

Key advantage: If someone tries to tamper with it, they can't easily push it to face a different direction. The dome housing protects the lens angle.

⚠️ Watch out for: If you install a dome camera outdoors without proper IP67 rating, rainwater will pool on the dome surface and fog the lens. We've replaced countless cheap domes for customers who bought online without understanding this.

When to Choose a Bullet Camera

✅ Best For: Outdoor walls, gates, perimeters, parking areas, factory entrances

A bullet camera is a visible deterrent. It says: "This property is being watched." For factory gates, farm entrances, and perimeter walls, this visibility is half the security.

Real installation insight: We install bullet cameras on the outside walls of textile units and godowns in Palladam and Avinashi. The long cylindrical shape naturally sheds water, handles dust better, and the IR LEDs throw light further than most domes of the same price.

Key advantage: Bullet cameras almost always have better long-distance night vision. If you need to see 30-40 meters into a dark compound, go with a bullet. Domes typically max out at 20-25 meters effective IR range.

⚠️ Watch out for: Bullet cameras mounted too low (below 8 feet) are vulnerable. Someone can grab the camera body and twist it, or spray paint over the lens. Always mount them high or inside a protective cage in high-risk areas.

The Smart Hybrid Approach (What We Actually Recommend)

In most of our installations—especially for factories and larger shops—we don't choose one type. We mix both:

  • Dome cameras: Indoor ceilings, cash counter area, office rooms, corridors
  • Bullet cameras: Entry gate, parking area, perimeter wall, loading bay, rear exit

This gives you:

  • Discreet internal monitoring where staff and customers won't feel uncomfortable
  • Strong visible deterrence at all entry and exit points
  • Better coverage of long outdoor distances with bullet IR

What About Multi-Lens Cameras?

If you need to cover a large area with fewer devices, our dual-lens, triple-lens, and 4-lens cameras can replace 2-4 separate domes or bullets. These are available in both dome-style and bullet-style housings, and in 4G SIM versions for locations without WiFi. We covered these in detail in our 4G SIM Camera guide.

Quick Decision Table

Your Situation Our Recommendation
Small shop, single room 1 dome camera on ceiling corner
Independent house (outdoor) 2-4 bullet cameras on walls
Factory floor (indoor large area) Multiple domes OR 4-lens dome for 360°
Factory gate/perimeter Bullet cameras + IR for long range
Farm with no WiFi 4G SIM bullet or PTZ camera (solar option)
Parking area Bullet cameras covering entry/exit
Cash counter/reception Dome camera directly above
