"Sir, I want the highest resolution camera, but my budget is low." We hear this daily. Higher megapixels mean sharper images, but they also mean your hard drive fills up faster. Let's find your sweet spot.

What Does Megapixel (MP) Mean?

Resolution ModelImage SizeOur Comparison
2MP1920 x 1080 pixelsStandard Full HD. Sufficient for a room or small shop.
4MP2560 x 1440 pixelsVery high detail. Best for cash counters and parking lots.
8MP3840 x 2160 pixels4K Ultra HD. Almost forensic detail. For large factory floors.

The Storage Trade-off

A 1TB hard drive that records 2 weeks of 2MP video from 4 cameras will only record about 5 days if you swap those cameras for 4MP models. If you don't actually need crystal-clear zoom, you are just wasting hard drive space and money.

Our General Rules

  • 2MP Cameras: Perfect for home interiors, corridors, and side walls. At night, 2MP sensors often capture slightly brighter images than 4MP sensors at the same price.
  • 4MP Cameras: The ideal standard for outdoors now. You get a noticeably sharper face at 20 feet. We recommend mixing 4MP outdoors and 2MP indoors.
  • 8MP Cameras: We install these at factory gates and covering large open compounds. You can zoom in to read a number plate from 40 meters away. Essential for large-scale commercial security.
