4 Easy Steps to Set Up Your CCTV DVR System
By GNC CCTV INSTALLATION AND SERVICES | We Install Security for Tiruppur Homes
You bought a DVR kit. The box is open, and wires look messy. Don't worry, this guide will take you through a basic 4-camera setup in simple steps. Even if you plan to hire us, it's good to know what the technician is doing inside the box.
Step 1: Mount the Cameras and Run the Cables
First, fix your cameras in the corner of walls or under the eaves. The sweet spot is 8-10 feet high. For bullet cameras, angle them slightly down. For dome cameras, mount them flat on the ceiling. Run the BNC coaxial cable from each camera back to your DVR box. Pro tip: Label which cable goes to which camera (e.g., "Gate," "Backyard")—it saves hours of confusion later.
Step 2: Connect the Hard Drive and Power Up
Open your DVR. Connect the SATA cable and power connector to the hard disk drive (HDD). Screw it in place. Without this, you have a live view but zero recording. Once secured, plug in the camera power adapters and the DVR power cable.
Step 3: Configure the DVR Settings
Connect your DVR to a monitor or TV via the HDMI port. The startup wizard will guide you to set a password, format the hard drive, and set the date and time. Set the recording mode to "Continuous" or "Motion Detection"—continuous recording is safest but uses more hard drive space.
Step 4: Get Mobile Viewing Working
Connect your DVR to your home WiFi router using a LAN cable. Go to the network settings menu and enable DHCP. Scan the QR code on the screen with the mobile app (like Hik-Connect or CP Plus Home). The app will link the DVR to your phone, so you can watch live video from anywhere.
